4 Trends Shaping the Security Industry in 2024

Now more than ever, business success hinges on an organisation’s ability to adapt to change and keep up with evolving trends – including advancements and updates in the security industry.

In 2024, several key trends are poised to shape the future of security, impacting the way organisations protect their people, property, and assets.

Let’s explore four of these security trends and how they may affect your organisation.

1. Data-Backed Insights for Cross-Organisational Growth

The security industry is evolving to provide businesses with more actionable intelligence from their security data. The most prevalent example of this is the demand for and development of intuitive, user-friendly dashboards that visualise data.

With such information readily available, businesses can gain valuable insights that can be utilised by various functions within the organisation. Marketing could better understand consumer behavior, preferences, and trends. Human resources could more easily identify patterns or incidents that may pose risks to employees. Operations and facilities management teams could analyse peak usage periods, optimise staff allocation, and enhance building security protocols.

The potential use cases are endless, and we’re only scratching the surface as we begin to unearth the gold mine of data that sits within security infrastructure today.

2. Rise of Cloud Migration and Hardware-Free Architecture

Cloud migration is on the rise, prompting a move toward hardware-free and serverless architecture. By leveraging cloud security technology, organisations can reduce hardware dependencies and adopt more agile security systems that can be easily managed and scaled as needed.

This trend is fueling significant innovation in the security industry, with particular advancements in cloud video and analytics as well as cloud access control platforms.

As technology manufacturers continually expand their offerings, introducing new products or enhanced capabilities that cater to the cloud, we expect to see further advancements and breakthroughs.

3. Smarter, Faster, and More Comprehensive Security Technology

Security technology is evolving at an unprecedented rate – and becoming smarter, faster, and more comprehensive.

Foundational technologies, such as security cameras, are more powerful than ever before, and new technologies are emerging to help organisations better protect their people, property, and assets. For instance, environmental sensors are helping organisations monitor more than just visible threats; they can detect vape, gas, temperature, light, and other environmental conditions.

These advancements are helping to provide organisations with a holistic approach to security, enabling proactive threat detection and mitigation.

4. The Era of Verification

The Monitoring Association (TMA) published a new scoring standard for security monitoring that provides a way to classify the validity or potential threat level of alarms. This new alarm validation scoring standard – TMA AVS-01 – establishes standardised methods for calculating an alarm score, or classification level, on a scale of 0 (“no call for service”) to 4 (“call for service with confirmed threat to life”).

The goal is to reduce dispatches for false alarms, improve law enforcement safety through data-driven situational awareness, and ultimately increase criminal apprehension rates.

While some businesses have been using alarm verification solutions for years, this new industry-wide scoring standard sets the precedent for a broader industry shift to alarm verification in the years to come.

The security industry is evolving rapidly to address modern business challenges. In 2024, alarm verification, consumer technologies, data-backed insights, cloud migration, and smarter security technology will continue to shape the future of the industry.

By embracing these trends, organisations can enhance their security measures, improve operational efficiency, and stay one step ahead of evolving threats. As the industry continues to innovate, we can expect even more exciting developments that will redefine how we protect what matters most.
